We got her from Minnesota Spay and Neuter Assistance Project (MnSnap), where I volunteer.
Sky had been hit by a car at the age of 4 months. The owner did not seek medical attention for her. A neighbor called Animal Control stating that the pup was dragging her back legs. The owner brought her in to MnSnap for spaying. He did not return to pick her up as scheduled after her surgery and he could not be reached. MnSnap is a low cost spay and neuter clinic that is not equipped to kennel animals overnight, but they made room for her. When reached the next day, the owner had an excuse but said he would stop by to
pick her up. He never came. He was contacted two more times, which resulted in just more excuses.
To classify Sky as an abandoned animal, Animal Control said that ten days had to pass - just in case the owner had a change of heart. SecondHand Hounds offered to take her in, but they could not pick her up until Monday. It was Friday afternoon and everyone at MnSnap already had plans for the weekend. I offered to take her home and care for her over the weekend. SecondHand Hounds sent out a representative to interview us and we were approved as an emergency foster home.
Saturday evening watching Sky play, my husband said he was glad she was with us. On Monday, we were asked if we would be willing to hold on to her until Thursday - they were having trouble finding a regular foster home to take her. My husband and I discussed Sky’s prospects of being adopted and, to us, it looked quite bleak. She was a fighter and a sweet cuddly pup but she was also high maintenance with her issues. We decided our home was Sky’s home! We have never regretted our decision.
